Week 4 Review: Kathy & Heba

Problem:  Children & Family-- provide entertainment for children, & a place for families to picnic, along with ample seating for both.

Solution: create 2 areas: a child play area with adult seating, and a seating area for picnic-ers

Tire Usage: The tires will be used in the construction of the childs' play area in structures & as a protective ground, and the seats will be created out of a tire bi-product.

Question: Would people want to have a picnic area combined with a childs' area? or will some park goers need space isolated from the children's section?

Week 4 Review

Group Members: Andrew Lapinski-Barker, Cornelia Marian

Problem: Lack of general interest in the park, lots of unused space, lack of community

Solution: Putting in a water fountain that ties in the waterfront and seating areas

Tire Usage: Used as the main design for the fountain, covered in textiles for color

Question: How will we get the water to the fountain? How will we implement enough seating/make the design kid friendly?

Week 4 Review

Group Members: Jordan Pelovitz, Anita Smith

Problem: There are not enough well-integrated sitting areas in the park, and there is not a whole lot of green space.

Solution: We plan to implement sculptural ferry-inspired seating/play areas along the length of the park, that maximize green space as much as possible.

Tire Usage: The tires would be used as building material and form molds; they would be stacked underneath mounds of concrete or dirt to lessen new material usage. Additionally, they may be used to line tunnels, create portholes, be woven together to create nets, or to duplicate the usage of tires on actual boats; as dock fenders.

Question: What would be the best sort of material for the boat's form itself? Is there going to be an issue of seepage from the tires into the dirt area around them?

Week Four Review: Kima Enerson

Problem: To provide seating for families and others that can be used for playing, eating and socializing while adding to the green space of the park.

Solution: Incorporate seating and play space into a linear structure that mimics the motion of the water.

Use of tire: As strips (ladder like construction) and as bricks.

Question: What is the amount of landscaping in the park? Is there an area that has less landscaping than other parts?

Week 4 Review

Group Members: Pierce Wolcott, Alexandro Flores

Problem: There is not enough sitting space or enclosed spaces that balance the separation of the park from the city.

Solution: We plan to design flexible boardwalks and benches that are enveloped by loosely woven rubber meshes.

Tire Usage: The tires will be used whole in the supports for the boardwalk and the benches. If weaving the shredded tires into a mesh is feasible, the enclosure could be made of tires too.

Question: what are our options for manipulating the tires' material

Week 4 Review: Anna B. and Ryan

Problem: need for a space that encourages social interactions and group encounters.

Solution: a wall like structure that incorporates vegetation and water and as well as creating a space where groups can interact comfortably and can by climbed and played around by children.

Tire Usage: tires will be used in shredded and formed into bricks to be used for the basic building block.  May try to incorporate whole tires into the design as well.

Question: is drainage and large water puddles forming in public areas a problem in the park?

week 4 review

Group: Courtney Koslof, Jaclyn Jacobson

Problem: There is inadequate seating along the park path. There are no dedicated areas for sitting/relaxing.

Solution: A system of modular benches that can be arranged in multiple configurations for larger or smaller groups. The area will be covered by a canopy to establish the purpose of the space.

Tire Usage: Tires will be used in the canopy and as the bench surface. Crumb rubber may possibly used to cover the ground.

Question for KHAS students: What other types of activities might people want this area for (other than sitting/eating)?

Week Four Review: Moyu and Madison

Problem: Improve seating and functionality for families

Solution: Incorporate various functions of the park through shifting structures involving playgrounds, seating, etc.

Use of Tire: Whole (Earthship building process)

Questions: Is there one place along the park that needs improved seating/playground most?

Someone earlier posted about a sign that says "no picnicking." Do people still picnic anyway?

Week 4 review Kelley, Dave

Problem: Incorporating new and useful features within the park using unwanted tires, while maintaining and enhancing the parks visual and cultural integrity.
Solution: Bury whole tires strategically and systematically to create varying ground heights. They will be placed in a manner which promotes self interpreted use of space by the user. When viewing the park from above, it will be interpreted as representative shapes such as a tulip styled fish. The use of tulips will help to convey this idea by introducing color. When the tulips die a fish skeleton will remain as the visual. Like wise when the tulips are living they will suggest a full, mosaic styled fish/tulip shape. The image will have a dimensional quality to it by having the tires buried beneath, giving it a "domed" feeling.
Use of tire:whole
Question: What are some of the traditional colors/color schemes for the region of Istanbul?

Picnic Table

After seeing all the posts about the lack of seating, and conversation areas, I thought I would post this picture. I really like this picnic table idea

Place research

Hi Eveyone!

My friend Tutku and I did research about places in Istanbul like Halic, Moda, Caddebostan and make a presentation. We share it here. We hope this picture may help.

otl presentation

my problem is picnic in Istanbul

This signboard says "Picnic is prohibited"

In Istanbul we don't have much green areas and when the summer comes people go for a picnic all over green areas in Istanbul. This cause polution so goverment forbidden to picnic in green areas and never put furnitures. But it can't stop people who want picnic. But if we design something that can remove this prohibition this make happy public and goverment.

There is some furnitures like this one in Turkey but it's impractical and if 2 groups want to sit there and if they don't know each other, they became disturbed so we have one people sit on big furniture alone and no one other him or her don't go and sit here.

ball nogues studio: pavillon speciale

I saw another interesting public space on Designboom, we can create this kind of space by tyre too! (http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/9/view/19941/ball-nogues-studio-pavillon-speciale.html)

all images courtesy of ball nogues studiolos angeles-based ball nogues studio has created the winning proposal for the second edition of the 'pavillon speciale' competition,a series curated by french architect matteo cainer in collaboration with the ecole spéciale d’architecture in paris, france. the pavilion's shape is produced by the deformation of materials under force, requiring formal explorations with full scale mock-ups to inform computer representations. digitalization of the studies then allow further process development within the studio environment. over 200 repetitive cells made from locally sourced plastic tubing are bent and wrapped within custom jigs. an additional sheet material placed within the modular unit will provide shade to visitors below the continuous canopy.the module may be flat-packed for transportation and quickly assembled on site, supporting the structure's temporary existence.positioned within the heart of the city, the installation will be constructed by the students within a courtyard garden adjacent to the schoolto create a sense of place during diverse weather conditions. the structure will be constructed no more than three months after the design was conceived, serving to dissolve the boundaries between academia and professional world, working together to experiment and learn from each other. the construct may be easily disassembled and relocated when a new location has been determined.
